Clean Car Standard

(You need to calculate and add this in if required)

There is a CO2 levy (Clean Car Standard) which your vehicle may attract if imported into New Zealand. This fee is based on the CO2 emissions of your vehicle. A high emitting CO2 vehicle will attract a higher levy.

The Clean Car Standard came into effect on 1 January 2023. It’s likely vehicles such as yours may be affected. More info can be found here:

FAQs

The Clean Car Standard is a government target that will regulate importers to reduce CO2 emissions of vehicles entering New Zealand to specific standards.
The Clean Car Standard will incentivise importers/distributors to supply cleaner cars to those living in New Zealand. If more vehicle buyers purchase electric vehicles because there are more low-emission options available, the vehicle carbon emissions in New Zealand will be reduced, helping achieve the Government’s target of being carbon neutral by 2050, and its commitment to the Paris Agreement on climate change.

This is based on the CO2 emissions of the vehicle. The MAXIMUM fee for USED vehicles is $3,450NZD.

You can search your vehicle by following the below instructions to see what similar vehicles have had to pay previously.

1. Visit the website below:
 https://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/clean-car-programme/clean-car-standard/information-for-importers-how-the-ccs-works/data-values-and-formulas/

2. Scroll down to 'Calculators'

3. Click and download the 'Reference file for vehicles'

4. Open the file, click on the 'Other' tab, and use the drop-downs to find your vehicle

5. Scroll over to check the dollar value under "Pay As You Go charge (2025)"

When your vehicle goes through Import Compliance, you will need to register for a CO2 account through NZTA. The compliance centre will send you instructions for this, if JCS Global has not prior. After your vehicle has passed compliance, and you have registered your vehicle, you will receive an invoice from NZTA for payment.

Your end of the shipping was magnificent but when it got to NZ VSS charged me an extra day for storage as a machine was away getting serviced. The transport cost $1341 and the CO2 $2079 tax were the hidden cost I never encountered last time I imported a car.
